A Place for the Dead at the Table

A family record from Bezdan describes a table intended for more than the living. A place and food, including poppy-seed pastry, were left for the deceased. No apparition is required: the empty chair and untouched food already create a form of presence and show how ritual arranged the boundary between memory and daily life.
